History of the Hall




The Village Hall is built in the grounds of the Old Parsonage.

1848/49 : New Parsonage (Now the Grange) is built.

1853: On 9th May 1853 General Taylor conveyed the grounds of the Old Parsonage to the Minister and Churchwardens of the Parish of East and West Ogwell and their successors
To hold upon trust for a school for the education of children and adults or children only of the Labouring, Manufacturing and other poor classes and as a residence for the Teacher.
This deed was enrolled in Her Majesty's High Court of Chancery on 25th May 1853.

1874 : School and house built by D.R. Scratton at a cost of £700.

1886 : School transferred to School Board

1902 : Devon County take over runninf of Scool and becomes a Council School

1929 : School becomes Ogwell Junior Council School

1932 : Mrs Williams becomes Head Teacher – stays until 1957

1957 : School closes

1959 : School bought by Parish and Deed of Trust for Hall Committee setup.

1961: Memorial Hall officially opened by Lieut. Colonel Lionel Gregory of Rawlinson Barracks on Saturday the 15th July.

1977 : Jubilee Room officially opened by Lt. Cmdr Holdsworth on the 15th January followed by a Cheese &Wine party.

1985 : Extension to form New Entrance and toilets.

1987 : Devon Room built

1989 : Kitchen extended

2008 : Toilet facilities upgraded

2011 : Upgrade of electrics and Heating System
